PhotoLA 2009

I just got back from two days at PhotoLA (or, the 18th International Los Angeles Photographic Art Exposition), which was held in the Barker Hanger from 1/8/09 to 1/11/09.  A fantastic opportunity to see what’s current and happening in the world of Fineart Photography.  I had a set of photographs at the show with the John Cleary Gallery, so this was a great excuse to spend some time looking at everything.

Most of the photographs shown were big, the ACE gallery takes the prise for most photographs shown over 5′ tall.

As someone who photographs extensively at night, there were a lot of interesting works to see.  I especially appreciated the photographs of Scott B Davis, some fantastic dark images of LA.  I briefly met Chris McCaw, who’s Sunburn series is fascinating.  The intense exposure to the sun burns a hole in the negative.  You have to read about this on his siteFerit Kuyas, a photographer that I met at Fotofest, had his wonderful City of Ambition prints on display with Stephen Cohen Gallery.  As someone who’s visited many parts of China, these really captured modern day China for me.  Gerald Forster’s nocturnal series also stood out.  I’ve thought about introducing people into my photographs at night, I suppose this is one way to do it.

Comments are included with the images.  If I remembered the gallery, I added this to the image.
